A Banned Books Week Gathering at The Romantics Archive

Books are meant to be read, discussed, questioned, loved, and shared.

As book challenges and removals continue to affect libraries and schools across the country, independent bookstores have an important role to play. We have the freedom to choose what we put on our shelves, amplify stories that have been challenged or removed elsewhere, and give our community a place to discover and talk about them.

At The Romantics Archive, we recently opened a new Banned & Challenged Books section, and we're excited to continue expanding it with books that have faced bans, restrictions, and challenges.

In honor of Banned Books Week, we're bringing readers together for a different kind of book club.

How Banned Book Club Works

There is no assigned book for this meeting.

Choose any banned or challenged book that interests you. It can be a classic you've always wanted to read, a contemporary novel you've heard about, or a book you discover in our new Banned & Challenged Books section.

Read it before we meet, bring it with you, and come ready to tell us about it.

We'll gather around the table and give each reader a few minutes to share:

• What book you chose and why
• A little about the book
• Where or why it has been banned or challenged
• Your experience reading it
• Anything that surprised you or made you think differently

After everyone has had a chance to share, we'll open the table for a larger conversation about the books we've discovered, the themes they share, and the value of having access to stories and ideas that may challenge us.

This isn't a presentation, and you don't need to prepare anything formal. Come as a reader.

We're continuing to research and expand the collection, and we'd love for it to become a place where our community can discover books they may not otherwise encounter.
